April 1st & 2nd, 1942 - Easter Cards

April 1st & 2nd 1942

Although these aren't specifically letters to George, I wanted to share a few of the Easter cards that George Lutz received in 1942. It is amazing to see that the greeting card world hasn't really changed much in all of these years! Contained in two envelopes, the card from grace and her family the Bauers, arrived in a single envelope, and the card from his parents arrived separately. Interestingly enough, there isn't much personalization with each card, as I suppose they left the creativeness to writing their letters back and forth.
As a side note when it comes to cards, my Grandfather George, was very sentimental when it came to selecting the right card for folks. I can remember quite a few times going to the drug store with him as a kid, and we would stop in to grab a card for someone for a holiday, then head out to Wendy's for some chili. I can certainly recall this was always quite a process, and it always seemed to take forever! He often times would look at so many cards you just wanted to yell "Pick one and let's go!". I'm curious to know if receiving cards while he was in the Army shaped this behavior.

Dear George

So you are the boss "Keeper of the Tools" now. i guess you had better get that checking system to work in sort order. It's not so bad to lose a small cheap tool but what happens if you should be short on a big expensive one.

How come you have to go out on problems again after all this time. I thought you were over that.

March 30th, 1942 - A Letter From Grace Bauer & Mary Kelly

EDITORS NOTE: This mailing to George Lutz is unique because it contained multiple letters. One from Mary Kelly, who I believe is the fiancé of one of George's fellow soldiers at Camp Wheeler. In addition, a newspaper clipping is included.

Hello Honey!
I received your letter with the snaps enclosed and I'll sow them to family when I go up the end of the week. I sent Gene a birthday card but won't be able to get up there on Tuesday as I have a club meeting at my house.
Honey I heard that little message at 11:30 on my birthday. I was so busy working that I almost forgot what time it was until my ears started to "ring". I quickly looked up at the clock and sure enough it was 11:30.

Hello Honey!
Boy, was I tickled to death when I received your present for me! I didn't think you would remember me remarking how lovely they were. In fact, I scarcely remembered myself. I just love the inscription on it. Mary has an inscription like that on her engagement and wedding bad and I think it's a grand idea. That letter you enclosed was so beautiful that is almost made me cry, but I knew you wouldn't want me to so I didn't. Thanks again for everything, and when I come down to see you in May, you'll be able to see how it looks on my ankle.

Dear George,

I am sorry to hear you didn't get any mail from home but you should have received at lease one from Dad. He wrote a day or two after you left for Ga. I Guess you have had some mail by now. Grace was up Sunday and she says she hadn't heard from you and hopes you are well.

Well Saturday was some rainy day and Dad left for to spend 4 days in the bungalow. He has the wall board for the new addition and thought he could put it on but he only got the walls covered over the weekend. He could not manage the big pieces for the ceiling above so he rolled in about 10 PM Sunday night.

We are all glad to hear of your new promotion and sure feel proud of the advancement you made since you are in the Army. That new insignia must give a little color to the uniform.

All week I've been waiting for a letter and was so disappointed. At last I was so worried I asked Mother to go up with me Saturday night to your house to see if your family had heard from you. I was imagining you in the hospital with Sal. It rained all that day and was still raining when we went up,
